The Office of Public Affairs, using a variety of communications platforms, provides internal and external information about the activities of the Service and acts as the public information voice for the agency in significant dispute cases, handling questions and information requests from the news media and issuing official statements from the Director. The director of public affairs also coordinates the agency’s communication with business and union customers, with members of Congress, and provides public information and communication skills training for field mediators.
Director of Public Affairs
John Arnold is the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, serving as Agency spokesperson and overseeing FMCS communications to the news media and to key public and governmental organizations.
Arnold previously served as Associate Vice President, E-Communications, for the Advanced Medical Technology Association, where he was responsible for member communications for the largest medical technology trade association in the world. Prior to joining the trade association, he was a principal in the communications firm of Arnold & Genero, based in Alexandria, Virginia.
On Capitol Hill, he served for nearly five years as Administrative Assistant (chief of staff) and Press Secretary for U.S. Representative Matthew Rinaldo (NJ). He supervised both Washington and district office staffs and was a spokesperson for the congressman on a variety of major issues. Before moving to Washington, he was a newspaper journalist and earned a number of professional awards for his work.
At Ohio State University, he received a B.A. degree and later did graduate study in European history at the University of Michigan. He completed his graduate studies at Ohio State, where he received an MA degree in journalism.
